The Queen of Coachella kicked off her set with "Hung Up" and from that moment on truly put on the show of shows. She crawled, slow-mo and pantherlike, along the stage's edge...she strummed a single open chord on a black Les Paul during "Ray Of Light" (sure, she's no Jimmy Page, but she sure looked cool with a guitar slung around her neck) while an army of silver-jumpsuited dancers vogued behind her...And she closed her all-too-short set with her classic early-'80s Danceteria anthem Everybody, as confetti and glitter rained down from the desert night sky.

If you couldn't make it to Coachella, this is not a problem! Enjoy Everybody in Madonna's first music video, shot on the ground floor of Danceteria on 21st Street.

Danceteria Was My Rec Room

Glenn says, "Every night I drove around town, hitting all the clubs. I got in and drank for free. The Mudd Club was my living room. Danceteria was my rec room. I was the Damon Runyan/Walter Winchell/Ed Sullivan of the new wave scene..."

And then there's TV Party, the movie. "From 1978 to 1982, Glenn O'Brien hosted a New York city public access cable TV show called TV Party. Co-hosted by Chris Stein, from Blondie, and directed by filmmaker Amos Poe, the hour long show took television where it had never gone before: to the edge of civility and "sub-realism" as Glenn would put it. Walter Steding and his TV Party "Orchestra" provided a musical accompaniment to the madness at hand, and many artists and musicians, from The Clash, Nile Rodgers, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Bryne and Arto Lindsey were regular guests. It was the cocktail party that could be a political party."

We're Not Your Monkeys

The Sex Pistols have refused to attend their own induction into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In a handwritten note posted on their website, they called the institution "urine in wine."... "We're not your monkeys, we're not coming. You're not paying attention," continued the statement.

We remember the night Danceteria panjandrum John Argento invited Johnny Rotten up onto the Wuthering Heights roof. "So you're a punk. Let's see how tough a punk is." We knew it was all theater to Argento, but as we approached the final few steps to the rooftop, J. Rotten decided to return to the VIP lounge. "How do I know your security team isn't going to grind me up out there?" It was a splendid moment, transcendent clubbery. And the right question. How do we ever know the security team isn't going to grind us up out there?

It's Intergalactic

A 1998 video from the Beastie Boys. As the Beasties executed their debut performance series at Danceteria on 21st street, and this video features the jaw-dropping electrocution of a giant squid demon, it is mandatory that we include it here.
