My Life, Remixed

Platinum-tongued culture pundit James Wolcott says, "Anyway, I'm not sure I've spoken to David (Byrne)Dbgrown1 since we chatted at Danceteria during a Love Tractor performance (I was amazed one morning to hear a Love Tractor track as the musical backdrop to the Weather Channel's "Local on the 8s"--those guitars still sounded great), but he's become quite the Jean Cocteau multi-arena, transworld artist since then and his journal is a superb travelogue of art, music, politics, urban vistas, and personal contacts.

Indeed worth an extended visit. See especially the remastered My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, remixed without the benefit of digital tech. It is to music as our hand cut-and-pasted invitations and flyers are to graphic design.

But wait...there's more! Soon you'll be able download tracks from the album for use in your own remixes. "This is the first time complete and total access to original tracks with remix and sampling possibilities have been officially offered on line. In keeping with the spirit of the original album, Brian and David are offering for download all the multitracks on two of the songs. Through signing up to the user license, and in line with Creative Commons licenses, you are free to edit, remix, sample and mutilate these tracks however you like. Add them to your own song or create a new one. Visitors are welcome to post their mixes or songs that incorporate these audio files on the site for others to hear and rate."

Paperback Believer

Everything is really one thing. Just looks like a lot of different things.

Serious Fun!

Leninworkersdt

Another important slogan from the mists of yesteryear. This was a potent sentiment at Danceteria Leningrad, the first American nightclub to open its doors in the Soviet Union. Everywhere else, Leninist loafers and lounge dancers became adept at pretending to be busy to avoid extended quality time in  the network of state-run, high security resorts. But at Danceteria, where the Communist elite met the street, the only requirement was to have fun. As we all now realize, this seed of defiance grew to eventually bring down the entire Soviet empire.

Improving History

Dressup_posterWe found this spectacular collection of Russian posters, and found some could use improvement, or even just translation. Like this one here. We encourage you to improve others with the Danceteria logo and Dixie portrait.

Singing in the Rain Remix

Okay, so it's a Volkswagen commercial. But you can close your eyes during the last five seconds if you want to. Personally, we might just do as we're told and buy the VW. But keep your eyes open during the first 55 seconds, okay?
